ToggleHamsters get a bad rap as “kids’ starter pets” — usually because almost everything sold in pet shops as “everything you need for a hamster” is inadequate. Done properly, a hamster lives a happy 2-3 years in a generous enclosure, builds tunnel systems in deep bedding, and runs miles on a proper-size wheel. Done the pet-shop way, they bar-chew miserable in too-small cages and develop tumours early.
Pick the right species first
| Species | Adult size | Lifespan | Solo or social | Handle-ability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Syrian (golden) | 15-20cm, 120-150g | 2-3 yrs | Strictly solo | Best for handling |
| Roborovski (robo) | 4-5cm, 20-25g | 3-3.5 yrs | Can pair (same sex, raised together) | Too fast to handle — watching pet |
| Russian Campbell’s dwarf | 8-10cm, 40-60g | 1.5-2 yrs | Can pair, often fall out | Bite-prone |
| Winter White dwarf | 8-10cm, 35-50g | 1.5-2 yrs | Can pair | Moderate |
| Chinese (not legal everywhere) | 10-12cm, 30-45g | 2-3 yrs | Solo | Calm with handling |
