Hamsters get a bad rap as “kids’ starter pets” — usually because almost everything sold in pet shops as “everything you need for a hamster” is inadequate. Done properly, a hamster lives a happy 2-3 years in a generous enclosure, builds tunnel systems in deep bedding, and runs miles on a proper-size wheel. Done the pet-shop way, they bar-chew miserable in too-small cages and develop tumours early.
